Last day in Buenos AIres

Image
After the alarm rang, my brothers and I woke up extra happy in the efforts to forget that our inevitable departure was looming over us. We head for the school and find out that it was Christian’s twin host brothers, Ivan and Miguel’s, birthday today. We sing happy birthday with the class and head to our room to discuss our favorite memories of the trip in hopes of bettering the experience for future generations. To show appreciation for our brothers, we added little notes on a Padlet. We then had our breakfast break before going into a room with the whole exchange program to talk about the favorite memories, experiences, etc. about each other with a finale of taking pictures and receiving both diplomas and art work created for and from our brothers. As the group realized it was the final day for any last minute shopping, we went out walking with our chaperones to buy souvenirs with any pesos remaining.  When we arrived back at school, we ate lunch and, after a bit of waiting, went to t

Teatro Colón and La Estancia

As the eve of our departure was dawning upon us we embarked on our last week in Argentina. We began the week visiting "el teatro Colon", a historic theatre and opera house where the likes of Mozart, Bellini and Beethoven performed and were honored at. Unfortunately due to scheduling issues we couldn't take a tour at "palacio Barolo", and so we decided to revisit the renowned monument later in the week. We cut our losses by dining at "Mostaza", a fast food joint which we have been getting bombarded with ad's about. To end the day we met up with our host brothers and took a five minute walk to Mallinkrodt the sister school of Colegio del Salvador. We conversed with the fourth years (juniors) about our experiences during our stay in Argentina, some of the cultural similarities and differences and helped them practice their English. We then went on a tour of the school and after eating some "alfajores" and drinking some "mate" we

City center and our last weekend in Buenos Aires

Friday On Friday, we started off the day by going to school, and later around 9:30 am, we took the Subte and went to the Plaza de Mayo where the "Casa Rosada" or pink house is located. The Casa Rosada is the seat of the Argentine national government and  houses the president's office. We learned that it was from the balconies of this house, that many important figures have addressed the nation.  In this square you can also find the cathedral, and the town hall (el Cabildo). We went inside and seeing the cathedral was my favorite for sure. We keep walking around the city center, exploring the streets, libraries, and churches. On Saturday, I (Christian) went to the game of the school team. We tied 1-1 it was a great game. After we played fútbol at Cuba's, I played goalie and I was a brick wall. At night, we made homemade burgers that hit the spot.  On Sunday, we went to Recoleta and after went to la feria where I bought a chain and a mate cup. For dinner we went to the

Que hice el miércoles Yesterday started with us meeting in Sala Hancko; we then immediately left for our walking tour to the famous avenue de Mayo. Eugenia prepared a scavenger hunt for us to do by finding specific buildings based on clues. We then would record the name, address, and other opinions on the structures. (¡Señora ganó!) After the tour, we went back to Colegio del Salvador to have lunch. I then went to Cuba, a gym, with Valentin and a few of his friends. It was super fun to workout, as I hadn’t done so in a while, and compete with everyone about how much weight we could lift. We then went home to rest, before returning to school at 6pm. From there, we took a bus to a homeless shelter, where we helped people in need by serving them food and having conversations with them. At first, I was not open to the experience, thinking it would just be something I had to sit through and not get much out of. However, I was proven wrong. I was moved by the people's stories; realizing

Long Weekend

Image
This past weekend Argentinians celebrated Flag day. Flag Day is on June 20th and people got to have a four days weekend to enjoy, relax, and share with family. Here is a summary of some of the activities we had the chance to do during four days. Christian- He went to a camp in the country and he rode a horse. He helped to vaccinate cows and gave them shots for fleas and other diseases. Helped around the farm, got to experience Argentina culture first hand.  Will - I drove to the country side with my host brother's family. I met his cousins and played tennis. I also went to the thermal waters and swam in the pools there. I watched a soccer game and played "mafia" which is like a mystery game.  Max - Went to two barbecues or "asados" in Spanish. He went to to the country and hung out with his host brother speaking Spanish. Max loved the meat because it was tender and moist. The cattle in Argentina are free range which means the meat is more flavorful. Aaron - He

Classes and the River Stadium

Image
On Thursday, all of us went to out first ever classes at Colegio del Salvador. Being from America, the overall environment was quite different than classes in BC High. Here, the students don’t change classes like we do, but instead they stay in one class and different teachers come in. Also, it was weird to hear the teacher being called by their first names since I’m so used to using their last names. Later that day, we all went to visit the enormous River Stadium. We got a nice private tour and learned about all the  history of the stadium and the soccer team. Then we actually got to go inside of it, but it was a but nerve racking because at some points I thought I was gonna fall since there weren’t any railings to hold onto. Friday was a day that we all dressed up in out nice clothes and we started off the day with a pledge of the Argentinian flag. After that we all had a special art class where we had to draw our host brothers without looking at the paper or lifting our pencils. No

La Boca, Recoleta y Tango

Image
On Tuesday, we began the day by learning the differences between Colegio del Salvador and BC High and also went over how the progression at Colegio works and what happens after graduation here. Then, we took a bus to the neighborhood of La Boca. We learned a bit of the history of the area and why the buildings were so colorful. We bought souvenirs and then ate at an Italian restaurant that had live Tango dancers. Later that day, we had a Merienda with all the host brothers and the students from Georgetown Prep. We ended off the night by playing soccer and other games.  On Wednesday, we then toured parts of the school and saw the pool and auditorium. After eating a snack, we were off to the cemetery. However, after a mix up we ended up not being able to go to the cemetery and went to a nearby church instead.  Afterwards, we walked to The Museum of Bellas Artes and before arriving we saw the UBA Law School and learned some of the history/superstitions about it. The museum had plenty of
